In this installment of Guitar Tips we'll talk about buying that first acoustic guitar. I'll talk about what to look for in a guitar that will get you start and also be fun and easy to play.

First thing is were to go to buy that first guitar. The obvious place would be a local music store. A music store will have the largest selection of guitars and will also have trained and knowledgeable staff.

When buying a guitar from a department store you are basically on your own. Most of these guitars are more toy than instrument. You will find these guitars are difficult to play because they won’t stay in tune and have a poor sound quality. trying to learn to play these guitars will be frustrating. A good starter guitar should be easy to play as well as keep in tune. The way a guitar is “setup” by the on site guitar technician can custom fit the guitar to the player. A custom fit can include the action (how high the strings are from the fingerboard), intonation (how well the guitar stays in tune up and down the fret board), as well as many other fine adjustments. The quality of the guitar and the way it is setup make playing guitar easy and fun.

You will also need to make sure that the guitar is the right size. Younger beginners will need a smaller guitar to start with, maybe a 3/4 or 1/2 size guitar. This size will fit their bodies and be more comfortable for them to play.
